A funeral service celebrating the life of Dorothy Weir Ruff, 84, will be held at Wittenberg Lutheran Church, 233 North Lee Street, Leesville, on Saturday, July 24, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Leesville Cemetery. The Reverend Michael Sherman will officiate. Pallbearers will be grandsons Ian, Jay, and Ben Ruff, Rob McEwen, grandsons-in-law Michael Reed and Scott Ziegler, and nephews Jimmy, Bobby, and Tommy Weir. Visitation will be at her home in Leesville on Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Mrs. Ruff passed away Wednesday, July 21, 2010, surrounded by family and friends. She was born in Newberry, SC, April 18, 1926, to Fred James Weir, Sr. and Helen Bedenbaugh Weir. She grew up in Newberry and married John Virgil Ruff, Sr. She attended Winthrop College, Newberry College, University of South Carolina and Lander University as a lifelong learner. She spent many happy hours working at the Batesburg-Leesville branch of the Lexington County Library. She was active in her churches, Redeemer Lutheran church in Newberry, The Lutheran Church of the Incarnation in Columbia and Wittenberg Lutheran Church in Leesville. Most recently she served on the altar guild, participated in the Morning Circle, attended Sunday School and church services. Mrs. Ruff was a member of the Honeysuckle Garden Club in Columbia, Camellia Garden Club, The Little Book Club, B-L Meals on Wheels program, and several bridge clubs until prevented by her illness. Mrs. Ruff is survived by daughter, Betsy Ruff McEwen, sons, John Virgil Ruff, Jr., James Ira Ruff, Sr.(Sue) of Batesburg-Leesville, and son, David Weir Ruff of Hoffman Estates, Illinois, her brother Fred James (Bubba) Weir, Jr. (Mary Lou), six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. She was predeceased by her husband of forty-one years. The Ruff family expresses sincere appreciation to caregiver Twanda Nesbitt, and Regency Hospice nurses Katie, Libby, and Angela. Memorials may be made to Wittenberg Lutheran Church at PO Box 3447, Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina, 29070. The family asks that donations be made to either to the Wittenberg Food Pantry or the Wittenberg Building Fund.
